Question

The standard tub is 5' (60"). We are redoing a basement bathroom. We removed the homemade shower stall from the 50's (don't ask) and I would love to put a tub in instead but there is only about 55 or 54" to work with. Is this an impossible dream to have a tub? Should I stick with a new shower stall?

Dear Clueless,

I know that clawfoot tubs come in 4 1/2 feet, and I think you might find one that is 4 if you look around. Either way it'd be a tight squeeze.

Good luck,

You might try checking with a dealer of Class A motorhomes - upscale models. My husband and I were looking at some the other day (no I can't afford one but they're pretty). Not only were they lovely and classy they also had under 5' tubs and tub/shower combinations. Just might be a source for what you need.

Really good idea about the RV dealership. Never would have thought of that myself.

Perhaps the folks over at plumbing have other teriffic ideas.

There is a local hardware store that specializes in having darn near everything for mobile home supplies, plumbing, appliances, electrical, towing... I do mean everything. Motorhomes/mobile homes probably use similar stuff, and they carry a variety of tubs/surrounds that are shorter than the normal house size. Perhaps even the warehouse supply places may carry them.

American Standard, Eljer, and Kohler make 54" bathtubs. Amerian Standard even makes a 48" bathtub. The 54" tub is not uncommon. Many trailers and modular homes have them. Lowes and Home Depot usually keep them in stock, or they can order one for you. Cost starts at $100.00 for an enamel on steel 54" tub.
