when the tank is full the water continues to run into the bowl.how do I stop this?

You can stop this by adjusting the float on the fill valve so that it stops the water flow before the water level in the tank rises above the overflow tube. If it can't be stopped, replace the fill valve with a fluidmaster.

This may sound elementary but I just helped my daughter with this. She didn't know how to adjust the ball - everyone has to learn sometime - last weekend was her turn.

In case you've never done it before the ball usually screws onto the arm. Look and see if yours is threaded on. Just back it off a little (not till it comes off), take your hands off it and let it settle, if the water does not stop, back it off a little more till it does stop running. This may take a couple-three tries. Easy does it. See if this helps.
