Question

I have a gas hot water heater and the overflow valve has been replaced three times and continues to leak. The heater is a 40 gal. US Water Heater(brand) and has 1989 as a date on it although I have not had it that long. The temperature has been lowered to minimum since the last two valves so it is not overheating.
Any suggestions?

The valve you are referring to is a pressure-temperature valve. Have you checked the water pressure in the house. If it is more than 50-60 psi you should consider getting a pressure regulator installed. 50-60 psi is not enough to open the valve but it is enough for a house.

Also, try the following: Lift the handle on the valve and flush it out good. Its possible that some trash may have built upin the connection hole and every time you change out the valve and cut the heater back on some trash moves into the valve.

Also, is it leaking around the threads. If so, remove the valve and put some pipe dope on the threads and re-install it.

Is there a rust buildup around the threaded nipple on the tank. If so, has it rusted thru? If it has, replace the heater.
