My Gas Hot water heater is leaking water from what appears to be a pressure relief pipe (long pipe on side with release flange at top) What could be the cause and remedy for this?

Does this stop leaking after you run a faucet for any lenght of time?

If it makes it stop then your dealing with thermo-expansion, and a thermo-expansion tank will need to be installed.

If it don't stop, then try replacing the T&P valve and see if that fixes it.
