auger snakes up

i dropped a lid in the toilet and now it flushes poorly. i am trying to push it through or retrieve it with an auger. however, the auger tends to snake around instead of threading down the pipe. could someone help me with technique?

A toilet has its own trap built-in, and it may be difficult to get something like a cap out of it without pulling it. However, just hand feed the auger over into the trap, and try to twist it out. If you can't get it out, then cutoff water, flush toilet, sponge out bowl and tank, disconnect water supply, undo two bolts at floor, and CAREFULLY turn toilet over on its side (breaks very easily), and try to dislodge it from underneath. Scrape off old wax seal, put new one on toilet base, reset. Good Luck!
