Question

Is it a good idea to replace just a portion of leaking GALVANIZED waste water pipe with a plastic(PVC) pipe? What is the best way to connect the two materials? THANK YOU for the advise.

Wink

Yes its fine to replace galvanized drain pipe with either pvc or abs plastic pipe.
The hardest part will be cutting the galvanized pipe. You can use a hacksaw if you dont mind the work, also you could rent a reciprocating saw (sawzall) to cut it or a large pipe cutter if you are lucky enough to have the room to turn it.
attach the new pipe with fernco style couplings, these are easy to use and have 2 hose clamps on them to tighten down. Get the style for "cast iron to plastic" you will need either a 5/16" socket wrench or nut driver to tighten this down.
Happy plumbing!
