basement bathroom
#1

I've recently moved into a home built in 1953, there is a bathroom in the basement with a toilet, shower and sink. The drains on all of these are just packed with what looks like dirt or old sewage. The drains on the shower and sink are 1/2"? I have broken through the concrete to get a look at everything. My question is what can I do to prevent all these drains from being plugged in the future. Everything from the upstairs drains without difficulty through waste stack. Is it possible to put a shower and sink drain below a toilet without it becoming plugged? What about putting in a sump pump and having the shower and sink drain into there? On Monday a plumber is stopping by to take a look and give an estimate. I'm just trying to be as informed as possible. Thanks

You don't have to do anything special to keep them from being plugged -- just do it right. I find it amazing that somebody installed a 1/2" drain on anything. It sounds like what you have now is a real hack job.
Put the correct size drains on all fixtures (2" shower, 3" toilet, 1.5" sink), correctly slope all drains (1/4" per foot -- or use a pump station), and vent everything according to codes. You'll have no trouble.
Do not drain the shower and sink into a sump.
Insist that your plumber get a permit and get it inspected -- your assuance of correct installation.
Good luck!
