Question

Hello there. Wondered if there is anyone that may be able to offer some advice. I'm trying to replace an old broken cast toilet flange. How are they installed and what is the best way to remove it? I am also replacing the floor and I know that I need to get the flange off before I can put the new floor down then install the new flange.Your assistance is appreciated.

Cast flanges on cast iron (soil) pipe are attached with a lead and okum caulked joint. You should see a ring of lead about 1/4" wide between the inside of the flange and the outside of the pipe. Best way to deal with it would be to cut off the soil pipe just below the flange, between the flange and the closet bend and use a Fernco coupling to attach a stub of ABS and a new ABS flange. You could also dig the lead and okum out of the hub at the top of the closet bend and use a Fernco doughnut there to convert to the ABS.
