Hard copper or rigid as it is oftten refered to is the prefered method for home use above ground. The job will look better and it is a lot easier to work with in above ground installations. Now while there are exceptions (like an ice maker line from the stop to the refridge) that is the general rule.
Soft copper that you roll out is used underground (ususally) and works well there. It is good to avoid joints underground because they must be silver soldered and this is time consuming in comparison.
