Help!! Can't disassemble Frost-free hose bib

I was going to install a NIBCO Frost free hose bib ( http://www.nibco.com/dl/LiteratureAs...stProofNPI.pdf ) tomorrow, but I can't get the stem assembly to come out to protect it from heat damage from the torch. I removed the retaining nut and the screw on the handle, but it won't budge! Any suggestions?

Ok, I figured out how to get it out but it took a lot more effort than I think it should have. After turning the handle CCW past what it felt like it should go, it seemed to break free. After pulling it out the packing looks like it had been torn from the sides of the pipe; like it should not have come out! There was also some residue from the packing left in the pipe. I'll post a couple of picture, is this faucet ruined or is the packing supposed to semi-disintigrate when removed?

I took the lack of response to my questions as an indication I was just being paranoid...and it turns out in fact I was. The hose bib went back together leak free and works perfectly.
