Water Softener Mayhem

Water Softener Mayhem
HELP! My husband has an awful habit of not putting salt in the softener for months on end. Last night he finally added 3 bags to about six inches of salt mixed with water in the bottom of our tank. It kicked into regeneration and to our dismay was still regenerating this morning. The only way I can get it to stop is to push the by-pass valve. If you have any suggestions, we could sure use them. Right now my husband is in the doghouse! Thanks

ummm thanks for reminding me of all the times my wife or kids couldn't put gas in the car..
Check the time on the ontrol valve to make sure it is current. If not the softener could have been in the middle of a regeneration and you stopped it because it was regenerating later than 'normal'. If that's what happened it should be back to the service position now so put the by-pass valve into the service position and when you can go without using water for a couler hours, do a manual regeneration. Otherwise you have something broken/sticking in the control valve and usually that requires troubleshooting and/or service.
And suggest to hubby that he doesn't add all the bags of salt he (or YOU) brings home; leave one out so when the thing needs salt, there's a bag to add and then put 'salt' on the shopping list.
