leaky compression fittings

What is the correct way to tighten a compression fitting? I've had varied results trying to connect copper tubing; sometimes they leak and sometimes they don't. I'm installing a new undercounter filter and I'd like the job to work the first time out of the gate. I never know if I'm over or undertightening the joints.

Thanks

Apply a little bit of pipe dope at the point the compression ring wedges between the stop and pipe, this works every time, tighten up real good.

As Ron indicated, the brass ferrule ring seals a compression fitting, not the threads.
Hold the fitting with a back-up wrench and tighten it as tight as you can.
Good Luck!
