adding floor drain to second floor laundry room

We want to add a floor drain in our second floor laundry. How do we go about doing this? Should we plan to tile the floor and use a water membrane, cement board, or some other approach?

To make the drain receptacle effective in case of a water spill you would need to either go the way you described, or just use rolled goods, linoleum.

This way there are no seams and the water will make it to the drain without seeping into the wood structure.

This is a code requirement for water heater installs on wood structures when there is no use of a drain pan and/or T&P drain line runoff.

Same can be used a template for your situation.

You can canter the floor so that water will gradually reach the drain, make sure to build up the floor with a ledge perimeter to keep the water continuing into the drain.
