vent pipe frosting over - Smells like sewage
Howdy folks, from Maine.
For the past 2 winters whenever we have long stretches of below zero weather (for example a week or more), my vent pipe blocks up with frost which causes sewage smells in the house.
This problem coincides with the summer when I added a ridge vent in the house. my house is about 25 years old and I was getting ice backed up and icicles growing, so when i had the roof re-shingled, i put in a ridge vent. No icicles, but now I have this smell in cold weather.
I have to crawl up on my snow covered roof and take my hockey stick and knock the frost off the inside of the vent pipe.
Besides purchasing a $300+ product from heatline.com (a Canadian company) and cutting the vent pipe and wiring power, etc…
Is there a simple solution to this problem?
Is there something I can do to fix this rather crawl up on my roof and knock the frost off?
thanks

If you can get to the vent pipe in the attic. just wrap a heater tape on it inside is all . It works. You dont say what size it is could you make the part out the roof bigger next summer
