Washer Drain and vent question
I am remodeling my house. I am moving the washer/dryer connections. The old washer drain was 1 1/2 pipe. So when I moved it I used the same size pipe to connect to the old drain. I think I may have two problems:
1) reading on here I see alot of people suggest 2" pipe for a washer drain. will I run in to problems using the 1 1/2"? I am about maxed out on my budget and really dont want to buy any more supplies, plus I don't think it would matter if I am tying back in to a 1 1/2" drain pipe anyway?
2) the vent.... a friend actually hooked up the drain and forgot to add the vent. the new drain is about 12' from the old one. I don't think the old one was vented anywhere near the drain, about 7-8 feet away. I just bought the house so I don't know if there were any problems with the drainage. my question here is do I need to vent from the trap or from the drain? can I move the trap closer to another drain and then tie in to that vent? what is the max distance for a 1 1/2" drain to be vented? what is the max distance between the actual drain and the trap?
Thanks!

I thought someone would have answered this by now.
Several issues.
You should install 2" line as it is a code issue. New washers pump water fast and older 1 1/2" standpipes and drains can develop drain problems from this. You also have to tie into a larger drain not smaller so this is something you will have to work out. If 15 foot or so of 2" pipe is crimping your budget, probably ougth to stop the process now.
There is a vent somewhere (or we will say there is). Once again, this is a code dependant answer for the length of developed drain, versus drain size, along with what code is actually used in your area. UPC is much tighter on drainage issues. IPC allows just about anything as long as it is downhill.
You need to know what code is used in your jurisdiction(let us know on this board) then we can tell you how long the run can possibly be for a given pipe size.
Good luck with your project.

Thanks for the response. I just got an order form from the state plumbing board for the codes. It is ICC (international code council). Does that give you a better idea of what I am dealing with?
I guess I can afford the supplies. I should have said that time is more of an issue which it is. My crawlspace under the house is very tight and hard to work under. Regardless, I will change the pipe to 2" if it is a code issue.
So, how far can I run the drain before venting? And when do I start counting the distance? from the p trap? or from where the drain comes down?
Can I enlarge the pipe under the house to a larger pipe to increase the distance between the trap and the vent?
