Cannot remove cap from steel water pipe

I am installing a water heater and am having problems with the piping which was already present and ready to be used with a shower/heater.

I was able to remove the cap from one pipe although it wasn't wanting to come out, however the other pipe's cap has only a small 10mm protrusion on it. I have been unable to find a square 10mm spanner and it refuses to move with either an adjustable spanner or locking pliers.... any suggestions? Help gratefully recieved...

ianpants69, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
You may be able to find a socket that will fit onto the square. This will give you more leverage to get it out. Good luck.
