Vent plugged or something else?

Our commode doesn't flush well and makes a gurgling noise. Then all the water drains out and the bowl doesn't refill. I told my husband that the vent is plugged. He said that's not it. Could it be the vent? Or is it something else? How do we fix it?

I hate getting into family arguments but I think its a vent problem. When any fixture, especially high water use fixtures, are used they need air to properly drain. This is produced from the vent. If it is safe to go onto the roof, look down the vent line with a flashlight and see if there are any clogs or blockages. Remove anything you can by hand and then flush with a garden hose. If it is indeed the vent, you are probably pulling the water from the traps in the bathroom sink and/or tub. This will alow sewer gas to enter the house. NOT a good situation as sewer gas is Methane. Please check the situation out as soon as possible. Reply back if you have any further questions. Good luck.
