Lead in soil pipe
I'm replacing a part of the main soil waste pipe and need to pick out some lead from a connection into it. Does anyone know the best way to do this?
I read previously something about a pick of some kind but does anyone know where to buy one (if this is the best way)
Thanks
James

I use a small chisel and apply some heat generously enough to make the lead pliable.
It should only be an 1" thick......and once you reach oakum it should gradually pull out.
Be careful not to pry to hard; you can bust the hub with pressure.

Getting the lead in was no problem. If it is a vertical joint it was just poured in with a ladle. Horizontal joints used an asbestos rope called a "running rope". It had a clampp on the end that when fastened around the hub of the pipe, formed a funnel like opening. The lead was then poured in and let set for a couple minutes before the rope was removed and the joint caulked (or corked) depending on where you live.
