I hear water running, but no water is leaking?!?

Hi,

I am re-doing my bathroom. the copper pipes are exposed and are solid. No water is leaking anywhere, I am sure of it. But I constantly am hearing the sound of moving water. When I put my ear to the pipes I can hear the water, just a low hissing sound. If I turn off the water main it stops. What could it possibly be? Any ideas?

Thanks,
- John

Leave the water on and turn off the power to your electric hw tank or turn down the heat on the gas hw heater.
Noise could be from water boiling that is trapped under scale.

Figured it out, down by the water heater is a valve that turns off the water to an outside faucet. It was turned off long ago because it leaked a little. Well it must be a bad valve, because when I tightened it as hard as I could the hissing stopped dead. Guess I have to replace it, and I never noticed leaking water because the tiny amount of leaking water was leaking outside!
