Unhappy Puzzling Laundry Drain Problem - Help!

We are having a strange problem with our laundry drain. On the washing machine's pump out (drain) cycle, the drain behind the machine overflows. We have to stop the spin of the machine for a few seconds to let the drain "catch up" or else it floods all over the floor. Usually, we have to do this several times during a drain cycle to avoid the overflow.

Here's the puzzling thing: This ONLY happens when there is detergent in the water. If we run the machine with just water (no soap), it pumps out with no problem at all. We've tested this a dozen times. A plumber even looked at it and said that there's no way there is a clog because it's a 3 inch drain, and also, there's no draining problem from our dishwasher or kitchen sink. He didn't offer much suggestion except that maybe we should use less detergent because it could be the suds getting air into the line, or something like that.

Well, the thing is, even if we use only a very small amount of detergent (much less than is recommended), this overflow still occurs. It appears that ANY amount of suds or air causes an overflow problem. But pure, non-sudsy water goes through fast - no problem. HELP!!! What is going on here??

Is this a problem with our washing machine? It only started a couple of months ago, and previously there were no overflow problems with this drain.

Sounds like a vapor lock.

Run the machine empty and look at how much water there is in the drum on the wash cycle. Then do the same thing on the rinse cycle. I think you will see a difference in the amount of water there is in the cycles.

What size is the wash machine drain and the length of run?
