Washing Machine

I do not have a washing machine hook up in my basement but would like to tie it in the the main line running out to the sewer. The problem is that the washing machine will be sitting below the pipe that runs out to the sewer. I know that washing machines will pump water up into a drain, can I just tie it into the main pipe (even though it is higher than the washer) and put a backwater valve on it or something?

Wash Machine

What you need to know is how far vertical the wash machine will pump. You need to know how high the drain is above the washer, you then add 18 inches if that is in the ballpark maybe you can do this [this is a local code issue]. Where I live 18 inch stand pipe is the minimum, thats from a p-trap to your wash machine drain line, no smaller than 2in. Lots of luck.

Codes do not cover the cost of replacing the washing machine. You are going to be putting undue stress on the machines pump. The water that does not get high enough or is left in the drainline will go back into the washer. (laws of gravity). Good luck.
