teflon on the thread of an union?

I am using a 1/2" and a 3/4" union for a simple copper pipe connection. Do I need teflon tape or paste on the thread for the union connection to make them water leakingproof?

Nope. Unions seal at the face. This is a machined surface. When drawn together, the two halves of the union are sealed. If you look at the faces of the two union halves, you will see that one side has a "funnel" type face. This side should be installed "going with" the flow. It prevents turbulents in the liquid flowing through it. I have used grease or plumbers grease on the threads for ease of disassembly should it be needed. Not necessary for sealing though. Good luck.

Teflon tape on union

Since most of the plumbing parts sold in the U.S. are made somewhere else, I would put a little pipe dope on the face of the union, a little on the threads will also help. majakdragon is correct, the face of the union is what seals, not the threads. Lots of luck.
