water lines knocking/shaking

When my washing machine stops filling with water, the pipes in the basement vibrate loudly for a second or so. The supply lines in the washing machine room do not themselves seem to shake or otherwise make noise. But the water lines in the basement that go to the washing machine room seem to seize up at the moment the washing machine cuts off the water. When they do seize up, they vibrate/shake/knock momentarily. Any thoughts why?

Fast acting solenoid valves that are found in washing machines and dishwashers/humidifiers on furnaces abruptly shut the water off.

You need to find out if your water pressure is high or not; anything over 60 is high and anything over 80 usually requires protection. A pressure gauge bought at any big box store will reveal this.

I'm not a plumber... but, you might want to look into a device called a hammer arrester. It's pretty simple to install - you just cut the supply line near the washing machine, insert a T fitting and screw it on.

sounds like they drilled to big of a hole in the floor joist for the pipe.they should of had wedges and pipe straps every few feet so it don't knock... u can just add a wood shim to the hole to make the pipe not move or put on some pipe straps and nails to board....

I bought two water hammer arrestors at Lowe's for $12 each. I've not had any problems since installing them. There as easy to install as you would a water hose.
