Rusty liquid under main pipe

Hi,

I don't know anything about plumbing - but here goes my question.
I live in a hundred year old house. In the basement is a big old looking pipe that runs along the whole side of the basement. I have some plastic bins stored against the wall under the pipe. I have noticed a rusty looking buildup on the plastic bins. The pipes themselves look rusty. Is this or can his signify a problem ? I have no plumbing issues in the house currently. I just don't like the looks of this rusty stuff underneath the pipes.
Thanks !

lrock96, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
The pipe is probably cast iron and is most likely your main drain. It is possible that it is cracked, but it is also possible that the moisture is condensation. I would advise you to try to dry it off (rags, blowdryer etc) and see if the moisture is coming from a certain spot or just covering the whole line. The line can be repaired by replacing either the whole line or sections with PVC pipe. No reason to replace if it's just condensate. Good luck.
