Pipe Sleeve

I'll be installing SCH 40 PVC pipe through a block wall and poured concrete footers. IRC 2603 requires sleeves but doesn't go into detail on what exactly is required. I had intended on wrapping the pipes with pipe insulation and duct tape as the sleeves but now I'm second guessing myself. Is this OK or do I need something else? What exactly constitutes a "sleeve" per IRC?

PVC pipe and concrete do not mix. The sleeve is to protect the pipe from breaking due to shifting. Most sleeves are steel pipe. The space between the pipe and the sleeve can then be filled in with silicone or other "flexible" material. Good luck.

Makes sense. I think I misread though- it doesn't call it sleeving in my case (P2603.3), it calls it "sheathing or wrapping".

I have two lines coming up through my footer and 6" block wall; the 1.5" one won't be a problem either way, but the 3" line has the top 6" or so the swept bend within the footer, and continues through the concrete block wall, where there isn't any room to put a 6" sleeve. I figured foam would be both cheap and easy to achieve the required 0.025" expansion room over the bend and also extend into the block. Must it be steel sleeving, or is 1/2" of foam OK here? Aside from the bit of swept bend, I'm passing vertically through all the rest of the concrete, though I will have 5 places where the lines run under a footer.

Can I just shape the gravel fill so it forms a rough arch over the pipe to get the prerequisite "relieving arch"?

Thanks!

I talked to the inspector this morning; he says no sleeve or sheathing is required at all for PVC drain line through concrete, but that there is a minimum size of 2", so I have to change my plans a small bit to accommodate that.

Also, the 10' test is required, but he allows it to be just 5-6' (head height) or so vice the full 10'.

Glad you got with the inspector. This saves us guessing what he wants.
