1950 shower stall faucet leaking

I need to replace my seals in a 1950's faucet within my shower stall. My issue is the rope seal it uses. I would like to change the threaded head out with a normal rubber seal. When I took it to Home Depot or Lowes, they laughed at me and said I will need to call a plumber to replace the entire faucet. I really don't want to do that becuase they will need to tear out the 1950's tile which is still in perfect condition.

Is there a way I can purchase new faucet fittings to replace the leaking ones?

James

Yes. If you take those stems to a local plumbing supply house in your area that deals with older faucets, they will supply you with parts to fix your problems. Expect to spend a significant amount of money. More than the amount it would take to replace the faucet itself.

I guess that can be my wifes b-day gift. She's the one not wanting to rip down the tile and replace the shower faucet.

Thanks,
James
