Washer Sewer Smell

Hi,

Last weekend we has a sewer back up in our basement because of tree roots in the main line. They were cleaned out an my husband has cleaned the sewer with Javex many times.

Our washer is upstairs with the drain going into the sewer.
There is a smell in the washer that we can't get rid of. We have put Javex down the drain and still smells. Seems to get worse when we do laundry.

Are we missing something that we should be doing?

Any help would be great!

Michelle649, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
Does the washer drain have a trap on it? If not, that is where the smell is coming from. Traps stop sewer gas from entering the house. What I did not understand is how the smell got into the washer. Is the washer hardpiped into the drain? That is, are you using the washer drain hose with the "hook" end on it, hanging in the end of the drainpipe? When used that way, air is admitted to the drain making it also a vent line. The trap keeps the smell from coming up the drainline and the open pipe keeps the trap from being sucked out when other fixtures are being drained. Let us know what the washer/drain hook-up is. Good luck.
