Some sink waste water into dishwasher
House is approximately one and a half years old and all appliances were new then. We have only used the dishwasher twice and the last time being July, 2005.
Saturday went to use the dishwasher and found a small amount of dirty smelly water in a puddle in the middle. Ran the dishwasher thru a rinse and dry cycle and only a smaller puddle of water remained in the sink. That was on Saturday.
Opened the dishwasher up today to check and found a larger amount of dirty smelly water in the diswasheer. We also have a garbage disposal hooked up to the sink and I'm considering that might be the problem, maybe some of the waste is not going down the drain . I apppreciate any help you can provide before I call for service, and do I need a plumber or disposal repair person?

water in dishwasher
There is supposed to be a small pool of water in the bottom of your dishwasher. Water cools and lubricates the pump.
If you don't run the dishwasher for months, the water will get smelly.
It is possible to siphon waste water from the sink or garbage disposal back into the dishwasher. That is why many codes require an anti-siphon air gap in the dishwasher drain line. It is often plumbed to the sink, using a hole next to the faucet.
At the least, the drainhose should loop up inside the cabinet as high as you can go (usually to right under the counter top).
