Broken Main Gate Valve
I was doing some work on my parents home. When I went to shut off the water to the house, the valve started leaking and wouldn't stop. Finally, I shut the water off at the valve out by the street and took apart the valve. It is a gate valve style that is corroded inside. But, It looks like I could replace the removable part and not have to do any soldering work. I bought a new gate valve that looks like the removable part will fit the old valve body. But, I'm having a hard time removing it from the new valve to put on the old one. Is it not supposed to come off?

After you loosten the collar nut, the gate should pull straight up and clear the milled faces of the boss. Now, if the gate you bought doesn't have the exact same size disk, it will leak, as the milled surfaces have close tolerances. Have you tried repacking the stem with teflon packing? If that doesn't stop the leak, it would be best to replace the entire valve with the new gate, or with a ball valve.
