Funky pipe below tub - trap?

hi guys. The pic linked below is a pipe coming from our tub (pic taken from basement garage below). i'd like to replace it w/ something that dosn't hang down like that (low headroom already).

I have not seen something like this before. Am I correct in assuming that it is essentially a trap? hence if i were to take it out, do i need a trap in its place? if so, i'm thinking an S-trap coming right down off the drain pipe, then 90-deg elbow to meet w/ the main line. Sloped of course for flow.
Would this be correct?

What you have is a drum trap. If you open the plug on the bottom you will be drenched so put a bucket under it first and work inside the bucket. You will probably find a bunch of matted hair and soap and maybe some treasure inside.

You may, if you desire, remove this unit and replace it with a P trap. I doubt that you would gain much headroom. You may NOT simply eliminate the trap.
