I would start by looking at stickers and tags on the unit itself. Since Sears does not make any of the appliances it sells, it was made by another manufacturer. Good luck.

Water Heater?

Finding dates can be a real game, especially when the seller does not make the unit. Usually you should start with the serial number. Do not let cleaniless have too much effect on your thoughts initially. Also, look for any stickers placed by service/installation companies.

Capacities and model numbers are frequently used in a serial number, so eliminate as much as you can.

You will not find anything as simple as 2004 or 1994. It usually will be in the form of 2 digits in the serial number. - Often a letter before or following.

Sometimes there is a 2 digit number for the month, but not too often.

Do not get confused with ANSI or other numbers that may actually refer to the year of the standard it was manufactured to meet (usually 2 to 10 years earlier than the manufacturing date).

After you have a date of manufacture, do not assume that is the date of installation. Depending on the level of home building, a water heater could be in a warehouse or similar facility for as much as 2 years before installation.

The date of installation is probably what you are after if you are trying to determine the amount of use and effective life.

Good luck!!

If you call Sears to ask about warrantee work, they'll figure it out pretty quick.
