noise in pipes

I have a new problem with a strange noise in my water pipes.

When the water is not running i hear a dull sound like a soft foghorn. It lasts for a a second or two. This sound is pretty consisent all day today.

I drained all the water out of the pirpes to see if that did anything but the problem remains. I checked all faucets and toilets for leaks and found nothing.

I would appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks

T

It sounds as if a toilet valve is allowing just enough water past the valve to cause it to vibrate and cause the foghorn effect. Toilets are the only automatic fill items in your house, so I would check each one of them to see if there is any water movement in the tank while this obnoxious noise is going on.
