garbage disposal drain leak.

Hi
I noticed leaking from the joint between the garbage disposal discharge tube and the drain trap (PVC). when I tried to investigate , the P-trap nut was loose and there was a beveled plastic washer lying somewhere in between. now I tried to clean the pipes very well ( the best I could ) and tried to attach things back together. My 1st problem is that I don't know where the washer should be and in which direction the narrow part of it should point to. which leads to the second problem which is the nut is not tightening well over the drain trap. also should I be using any kind of pipe thread ?. I tried to connect it in different variations but it continued to leak. please advise. thank you.

The beveled washer should be pointing towards the trap - flat side towards the disposal - Use pipe dope or teflon tape to ensure you've got a tight connection. The dope/tape doesn't seal the joint, but rather acts as a thread lubricant - allowing you to tighten it to a waterproof state.
