Shutting Off Water Question

I have a question regarding a gas water heater. If I am going away for a few days and I want to turn the main water supply line off going into the house, is that safe and ok for the water heater? Do I need to turn the water heater off and shut off the pilot? I just dont want to ruin my new water heater, but I want to be safe and turn the main water supply off in case there is any plumbinf issue's.

Thanks

Wink

If you are going to turn the water off Id for sure also turn the gas off to the heater or just turn it off but let the pilot light on

I turn off the gas to everything except the furnace and also unplug the vent on the water heater. BTW, my water heater does not have a pilot.

My Gas water heater has a vacation mode, can I just put in on that and then turn my main water supply off. I didnt want to hassle with trying to lite the pilot when I get home.

Thanks
