Foul smelling standing water in Yard

We do not have a septic tank.

We found a small area in our side yard that is foul smelling & has white stuff floating on top of it. It hasnt rained in days & the rest of the yard seems fine?

We are going to call a plumber, but in the meantime, could this be a sewage line leaking? What else could it be?

It sure sounds like a broken sewer line. Is it in an area where a sewer line might be located i.e between the house and the street? Look to see the direction your sewer line exits the house. Is there any chance the house has a separate dry well for grey water?

If you have a shovel, why not do a little investigative excavating before calling in a pro? If you can find out exactly what the problem is the plumber is better equipped to give you a repair estimate. You'll probably even get a break on the price if the guy doesn't have to dig.

We have even had roots from nearby trees penetrate and break through a sewer line in the yard.
