shower drain i bought has a 'jiffy joint' or black donut???

I am trying to replace a shower drain and the only drain i could find at my local hardware store was a drain that had a black 'donut' inside of it. The salesperson told me it was called a jiffy joint but had no idea how to install it. is this a compression sort of drain or do you glue it or what? Also - it this a good solution or should I wait until I can find a solvent drain?

any suggestions would be appreciated.

Chris, it just slips onto the 2" pipe and creates a waterproof seal. There is a split hard ring under the soft rubber and a solid hard ring on top.
