Replacing cast iron drain pipe
The iron pipe has rusted through in spots below the kitchen sink. How can I seperate joints if they are leaded in? How can I join plastic sewer pipe to the old cast iron pipe?

Cast iron pipe can be cut with a Sawzall, although that can be a real pain to do, especially in tight places. One can also use a pipe cutter with a cutting wheel and 4-roller versions are made that can cut pipe with only a little more than 90 degree movement in tight places. These can be rented; ask for a 4-jaw pipe cutter. Pipe can also be broken with a chain-type device that wraps around the pipe and tightens until fracturing the pipe, and are rentable as well. As far as I know, you just bust out old cast iron pipe with sledge hammers, etc., but do make a cut first where you want to stop and adapt to plastic pipe. Rubber FERNCO couplings are made to adapt cast iron to conventional PVC pipe.

Thanks for the input on Fernco fittings.
If I could separate the joint (lead) I could probably fit a plastic soil pipe into the cast iron. How do I clean out the joint without burning the house down?

you don't. a no hub or or rubber coupling is the only "approved" connection to transition from cast iron to another type of pipe. there is a reason for this. i have at times been able to crack off the outer pipe to make a connection but as you have found out after to clean off the lead its not worth the effort. just cut it off and re-run it.
