pvc to cast iron

In repairing a cast iron drain how do connect the new PVC pipe to a cast iron bell. Seems like I remember seing somone use a rubber ring that he put around the PVC and then inserted it into the bell of the cast iron pipe then hammered the seal home. What is this called? local superstore guy doesnt know what I am talking about.

IS there something like this that will fasten cast iron to cast iron. I realy dont want to use lead but I can if I have to.

OK the item used to seal cast iron joints is called a "donut". Guys at the superstore still dont know what they are. Found this after much digging on the Fernco site for one. Apparently this is the current prfered method of joining cast iron pipe. I guess I need to catch up with the times
