Mechanical vent

I know that the mechanical vent should be placed behind the trap, but there is really no room to do this. Would it help at all to place this device prior to the trap. Thanks

You are using the term "Mechanical vent", and I assume you are talking about an AAV or Studor vent. The vent should be on the opposite side of the ptrap as the sink drain, so as to allow air to equalize in the drain pipes.

Agree with Brent Turner, a AAV or a real vent is usually a waste of time if placed before the trap, if you would explain why you need this we may come up with different ideas that may help your situation.
