Brass Pipe question

I am taking out old brass pipe in my bathroom and replacing with copper. Covered over all of the brass fittings is a black gunky residue, perhaps some type of old sealant? The house is old - close to 100 years - and I'm sure the plumbing is original. Any idea what this is, and what's the best way to remove it? It's hard like concrete. Maybe thinking of heating it up to loosen it - but want to make sure that's safe and smart.

Nevermind - with a little pressure, it cracked and came off.
