black pipe installation

What is the best sealant/lubricatant for working with threaded 1/2" to 1" black pipe for extending an existing black pipe gas line in a residence ?

Thanks

I've got a teflon-based pipe dope in my plumbing box that works fine. A lot of plumbers use only Rectorseal - I'm gonna buy some next time I see it. I'd never use teflon tape on iron pipe.

You need to use a pipe sealant that is specifically approved for gas.
I will add that if you do not know you must have a permit for something as seemingly simple as what you want to do.

Two other brands of thread sealer good for gas lines are Leak Lock and Gasoila.
