gate valve rebuild

I have a main water valve in my home that I can not turn the water off completely. I would guess that it is dirty and not allowing the valve to shut fully. The valve is a gate valve type and I see that I can remove the gate from the valve body. Is it possible to remove the insides so to speak, clean, and reinstall them? Do they make a rebuild kit for this? Is this something that is commonly done? The valve is sweated in and it would be easier to clean it out than to replace the valve. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

thanks, mrt19

No, a gate valve cannot be repaired.
The gate and mating surface are precision machined and once worn are beyond re-use.

Besides, if this is the main shut off you will have to arrange for the municipality to shut off the water supply and you don't want to be messing around.

Gate Valve

Back in the day when gate valves were common it might have been worth the time to repair, now since they are passe on domestic main shut-offs it dosen' make sense to repair,$$$ and time. Get a new ball valve and replace. Luck.
