Installing bathtub faucet - sizing brass nipple

I am about to install a new faucet fixture for a bathtub.
There is a 1/2" brass nipple capped that was placed prior the installtion of the finished wall. I need a nipple that extends exactly 3-7/8" from the finished wall so I can screw the faucut spout on. The nipples come in lengths at 1/2 increments, I beleive. How can one adjust the length of the nipple accordingly?

For tub spouts, 1/8" will likely not matter, 4" should work fine, possibly even 3 1/2"

A little tricky, but you probably have plus or minus one turn tolerance on either end, which gives you >1/4" to play with.

If necessary, good supply houses often have a pipe threading service, with a nipple jig for their threader, and can produce a custom length.
