Muriatic acid and PVC Pipe

What effects will Muriatic Acid have on PVC pipe ?.

I have a dry well approximately 30' out from my laundry room and it backs up when the washer drains, have a lot of trees and shrubs in the area and believe the roots from these are causing the drain to backup.

Muritic acid (hydrochloric acid) won't do anything to PVC, most acids won't. It's solvents that you have to worry about.

Muriatic acid may not do much to those roots, although the roots may not appreciate the acid. Wood fiber is about 50% cellulose; chemical dictionaries list 'Schweitzer's reagent' (copper hydroxide and strong ammonia) as being able to dissolve cellulose. You might try lye (sodium hydroxide) down the drain first.

That is if you can find Lye. Here you have to sign for it and fill out BATFE paperwork (not really), but it is a key ingredient for Meth, and alot of places won't sell it over the counter. I am not an advocate of chemicals in the environment in the first place, so I would try a manual rooting of the pipe with a cutter if possible. Hopefully no roots have found their way through the walls of the pvc, and it is just a clog.

Copper sulfate crystals will take care of the roots. But are you sure a dry well is allowed for gray water???
