Broken Bathtub stopper

I was trying to replace the bathtub stopper assembly, which is the type that you twist the stopper until you find the groove which allows the stopper to drop down and seal the drain. I removed the stopper by loosening the little screw on the underside of the stopper, and then tried using plier handles to twist off the shoe(metal drain portion of the unit that screws into the drain hole), which is what the directions said to do. There are metal crosshair looking things at the bottom of the shoe that I was using to unscrew it with according to the directions, but as I was twisting, they broke off. Anybody have any ideas on how to get the shoe out now?

Watco

You are describing a Watco (brand) lift and turn assembly. These are very inexpensive waste and overflow assemblies for bath tubs. Best and cheapest fix is to purchase another one then just replace the basket strainer portion (the piece with cross hairs) and stopper. You will not need access behind the tub to do this. They do make specialty tools to remove the strainer once the cross hairs are broken but its much cheaper to just cut the strainer out with a hacksaw blade. Make a cut through the chrome strainer across the flange area in the tub. Donít cut to deep to scar the tub, almost is better then all the way, cut up and down on the inside of the strainer in line with the cut in the flange, again not so deep as to cut the threads in the shoe that its screwed into as these are plastic. Use a screw driver and hammer to finish separating your cuts. This will allow you remove the strainer. Be sure and put some plumbers putty under the flange of the new strainer before installing it and your finished. I hope this helps and good luck.
