Weird tub drain

I don't have much plumbing experience so I wanted to ask this here before I start taking things apart. My tub has a lever-style overflow drain and I think it might be installed upside down. The lever seems to be spring loaded and always springs back up (closing the drain) unless I hold it down....which is quite a pain. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Thanks,
Alex

This is sort of hard to do over the phone, so to speak, but the linkage may not be hooked up right. Someone probably had it out and apart once, to get a snake down there and they forgot which hole to put the male peg of the lever into. Some have 2 holes. Or, the length needs to be adjusted some. Takes yours out and look. If yours does, try the other hole.

It is not upside down if the drain opening is on the bottom of the cover plate; it IS upside down if the drain openings are pointed up.

BTW, my description applies to the rotating lever type, not the flip up lever type.

Sounds like you need a new lever/cover piece.

Its spring loaded, and the weight is pulling it back down.
