Unhappy corroded shower Faucet/Water valve?

My husband and I just remodeled our master bathroom and one of the very last things on the to do list was to cleanup the faucet and knobs for the tub/shower.
Hubby took the knobs off and when he was putting it back on, the piece that the shower knob screws onto completely broke off and is stuck inside the knob. This plumbing I'm pretty sure is over 20 years old. Can this be fixed easily without having to replace the valve by tearing through the wall?

Since we just completed the bathroom the last thing we want to have to do is pull anything else apart....

Please forgive my lack of knowledge in this area, I hope that I am explaining clearly...

Please give me some hope!
I can take a picture if that'll help.

You will have to pull the stem/cartridge out, salvage or buy a new handle. Hire someone, or start early in the morning so all the shops are open. Good Luck!
