Vanity top - dimensions needed for double sink

Would appreciate opinions: What is vanity top minimum length needed in order to have room for two sinks? I'm purchasing a new vanity and have about 54 inches of wall space to work with. Would a vanity top of this length be long enough for two small sinks, or would it be too "crowded"?

Also, what code issues (if any) should be anticipated in installing two sinks where there was only one previously? Can two sinks share the same water supply valves and drainage?

Thanks.

48 inches is about the minimum for a two bowl vanity... 54 is excellent.

No issues using the same supply/drain for both sinks....
