"sand' in toilet bowl

I have what appears to be grains of sand in my toilet bowl even though I clean it every day. This problem started one year ago. I have cleaned out the tank and periodically drain the water in the bowel and scrub that out. The "sand" has etched marks in the bowl and it now looks dirty even after I have just cleaned it. Aside from the appearance, I am concerned that my pipes might be falling apart (the house is 66 years old) and causing this problem. Any suggestions?

call the county and have them open a fire
hydrant to flush the system,this may help.

Replacing Electric Water Heater with Gas Heater

I have a 50 gallon electric water heater that I want to replace with a 40 gallon gas water heater. Family of 5 , 3 small children and 2 adults. What should I be looking for in a 40 gal. gas water heater ? My brother in law was trying to convince me to go with a boiler mate off my boiler. It would be more expensive, but would last longer and is much more efficient. Any tips you have regarding this would be appreciated.

In my bathroom there is no hot water - but there is in the other bathroom on the same floor. We have had the hot water heater checked and it is OK. Any suggestions?
