Question

We are looking at buying a new home that has a first floor laundry. The laundry room is very small and is the mud room from the garage also. We have decided that if we buy we would move the washer/dryer into the basement directly below the existing laundry room. Our question is - will the washing machine pump the water out strong enough to go up to the existing plumbing?

Depends on your washing machine. We don't have very many basements here, but I have seen one where the washing machine itself pumped up to drain with its own pump, so I guess some can. I would install a check valve in the drain line near the washer, tho. Check with your washer manufacturer, the local building inspection dept. or a pro plumber, and see if they can help you answer your specific question.
